Ages and Aaaages of Steam
Brian and Roman around for boardgames: AoS had been flagged in advance, so I'd given the rules a goodly read-through in advance, punched some bits, and was generally ready to roll.

So I thought, at least...  Quite a few rules sidebars before we started -- I thinking having printed and read the FAQ would have been a good idea, too...  Brian had connected up a length-3 route, and had his loco able to make length-3 runs, while Roman and I were still faffing around trying to maximise the number of length-1s we'd be able to monopolise.  I think he had it won pretty much from there, though the devil was very much in the detail...

The winning move?  (In the second turn.)

Owch.

Final position:

Scores: totals rendered somewhat meaningless due to a serious misapplication of the "income reduction" rule.  But at any rate...  B: 3*72+33-3*9=222; A=3*59+30-3*14=165; R=3*34+25-3*15=82.  Had we played IR correctly, I think it might have things significantly closer, but might have also made things even more "tight" for cash, especially for Roman and I.

I enjoyed it, perhaps in a somewhat masochistic manner, and would like to play it again soonish...  perhaps in part to amortise our "sidebar"/"misunderstanding losses!

Rules cock-ups are one reason for playing online, but really I'd almost like to have a computer moderated boardgame for face-to-face play just to get the scoring right in some situations.

How long did this one take to play?

Yup, I can think of several situations like that, funnily enough. :)

Ideally, one would have a light-table with real pieces on it. Or even RoboJeeves, politely coughing in the background. "I think that sirs will find that the author's intent -- though lamentably poorly conveyed in textual form -- is that loops be precluded, that income adjustment occur on the scoring track as a separate step, and that topologically equivalent usages of tiles in town hexes be freely interchangeable. Oh, and that all new continents score in Trias... Perhaps sirs would care to select duelling pistols for settling the matters in the traditional manner?"

Aaaaaaaaaages. Perilously like six hours, of which I'd guess two were prep and sheer sidebars, and two JtB. By the end we were getting through turns very quickly... but that might have been sheer hysteria setting in. Target for next time, < 4h?

I love the idea of a light table, as it also adapts nicely to roleplaying and dungeon crawling (if they're not both RP).

What is the precise scoring rule for mid-game Trias then?

I was warming to the holographic Stephen Fry, myself...

On Trias: good question! I found a thread on BGG that seemed to support Sam's recollection, but without the rules in front of me, I wasn't entirely clear. Though apparently last time *with* the rules in front of me I wasn't entirely clear...
